CELEBRATIONS & COMMUNITY CONNECTION:

May brings opportunities for our Valor community to learn, celebrate, and reflect together. This month, we recognize Lupus Awareness Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and Mental Health Awareness Month. Each observance invites us to honor the histories, experiences, and identities that shape our community.

Upcoming Religious & National Observances

  • May 15 | Ascension Day (Western  Christian): Also known as Holy Thursday, celebrated 40 days after Easter, it commemorates the ascension of Jesus into Heaven

Civic Engagement

  • While national politics often receives the most attention, local elections shape systems our families interact with daily, including schools, neighborhoods, public services, and community resources. For Valor, civic engagement reflects our belief that every family brings wisdom and lived experience that should be represented in decisions impacting our community.  Davidson County voters showed up for the May 5 primaries. Missed voting on May 5? No worries! The next election is Thursday, August 6, and early voting begins July 17. Be sure to check your voter registration status here and make a plan to participate.

Suggested Attire for Graduates:

  • These are the suggestions and requirements for students’ attire on graduation day:
    • Requirements
      • Graduates must bring their cap and gown to graduation. Graduates are permitted to decorate their cap.
      • Graduates should wear either a dress or a skirt, or wear dress pants with a collared, button-down shirt and a dark-colored tie.
      • Jeans are not allowed – even black jeans – for this ceremony.
      • Students should wear dress shoes. No sandals without a backstrap or flip-flops.
    • Suggestions
      • Wear shoes that you know you can walk in. This is not the time to try wearing pump heels for the first time, given that you will be walking in front of a room of 2000 people … on stage. As such, high-heels and wedges are strongly discouraged.
      • Dresses should likely be shorter than the graduation robe, which will hit somewhere between the mid-calf and heel.
      • Dresses and skirts should be lightweight and shouldn’t be too full so they are able to comfortably fit under the graduation gown
