Health, Wellness, Relationships & Adolescence Curriculum
Dear Middle School Families,
We are looking forward to bringing back our Health, Wellness, Relationships & Adolescence (HWRA) curriculum this spring for students in grades 5–8. The first lesson will begin March 16.
This year, HWRA instruction will take place through PE classes and, for select grades, during Compass Class in partnership with Hope Clinic.
Below is an overview of what to expect by grade level:
Grades 5 & 7
The HWRA lessons for 5th and 7th grade are based on Tennessee state-mandated guidance. In 2018, we worked with a curriculum writer who designed these lessons using a variety of vetted sources to ensure alignment with required standards.
Students will participate in 3 lessons centered around wellness, disease prevention, and making healthy choices. Lessons will take place during PE classes throughout the months of March and April and will be taught in mixed-gender settings.
Families will receive access to review course materials in advance to support any conversations you may wish to have at home. The 5th and 7th grade curriculum is linked HERE and includes the slide deck for full transparency.
Grades 6 & 8
We are pleased to continue our partnership with Hope Clinic for Women to deliver HWRA instruction for our 6th and 8th grade students.
These lessons will take place through PE classes and Compass Class in partnership with Hope Clinic.
Hope Clinic’s relationship education programming is rooted in the REAL Essentials curriculum and focuses on helping students understand their value, develop critical thinking skills, and make healthy choices aligned with their goals and future.
Families can review the Hope Clinic curriculum directly within the permission slips via hyperlink or QR code.
For all grade levels
A signed permission slip is required for participation.
If we do not receive a signed form, students will be automatically opted out.
Students who opt out will complete Nutrition-based lessons during PE for a classwork grade using their Chromebook or provided resources.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Jacob Waid at jwaid@valorcollegiate.org
NURSE UPDATES
As we approach spring I want to remind parents that if their child has allergies they can leave medication in the nurse’s office for them to use when they have flare-ups. As with all medications, the procedure is for an adult to bring in an unopened package of medication and fill out our medication administration form. They are available at the front desk and from the nurse. If the medication is prescription, the form will need to be signed by a healthcare provider. Please do not send your children to school with medication. It needs to be brought in by an adult and kept in the nurse’s office. This helps keep everyone safe and medications secure. Thank you so much! Alphonsine Haslet-Phillips, RN
Finally, we have had an uptick in flu, strep, and colds infections. Please, remember that if your child has a fever (>100.3), diarrhea, or vomiting they should stay home for 24hrs until the symptom is resolved without the use of medication.
