Health Updates From Your School Nurse:

As fall is finally here, I would like to take a moment of your time for our annual reminders about both the FLU and MENINGOCOCCAL DISEASE, as is required by the State of Tennessee.

FLU:   Flu season is here! The flu can cause illness that is mild to severe, depending on both the age of the person and their health status.  Some symptoms may include:  fever, headache, exhaustion, muscle aches, sore throat.  It is spread through droplets that are produced when a sick person coughs, sneezes, or talks.  The #1 way to protect yourself and your community is to get the annual flu vaccine in the fall.  It will help prevent transmission in the community and reduce the severity of any flu that you may contract.  Similar to Valor’s sick policy, a person with a fever or signs and symptoms of the flu should stay home for 24 hours after a fever/symptoms have stopped (without the use of medicine).  For more in depth information from the CDC please visit: https://www.cdc.gov/flu-resources/media/pdfs/2024/07/flu-you-brochure_2019.pdf

MENINGOCOCCAL DISEASE:  It is any illness caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis.  It can cause bacterial meningitis, or dangerous bloodstream infections.  Anyone can contract the disease, however, infants, adolescents, young adults, and those older than 65 have an increased risk.  It is spread through respiratory secretions.  Although the disease is relatively rare, it is very serious and can have life threatening consequences and life altering side effects in a short amount of time.  The disease can come on very quickly and symptoms  may include:  high fever, stiff neck, vomiting, confusion, and rash. The CDC recommends vaccination for 11-18 year olds for the best protection against the disease.  For more information please visit:  https://www.cdc.gov/meningococcal/index.html

Lost and Found Updates

The lost and found at Voyager is full of items that have been misplaced! We are not able to keep all these items for an extended time, so items get 2 weeks in the lost and found before being donated. If your scholar is missing something, please encourage them to come check the lost and found, or you can come check it yourself! This week was especially full of jackets, so please come find your missing items before they are donated.

As we move deeper into November, our community continues to honor remembrance, service, and belonging. Nationally, November recognizes Adoption Month, Native American Heritage Month, and Military Family Appreciation Month, inviting us to celebrate love, resilience, and community. This period also includes national moments of reflection and celebration, along with local events that strengthen connection across Nashville.
